To celebrate Australia Post’s bicentenary a commemorative postal numismatic cover was released by Australia Post and The Royal Australian Mint. The coin's reverse depicts the 19th century Cast Iron Posting Box located in the Melbourne suburb of Newport. Like red sentinels, posting boxes have stood guard on the streets of cities and towns in Australia for more than 150 years. In 1856 the first cast iron street posting boxes were installed on Sydney’s streets. Prior to this, the public handed their letters in at a post office or to a postman on his delivery rounds. Cast iron posting boxes were designed in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Most were cylindrical with a decorative frieze and topped with a feature such as a crown. The 2009 uncirculated one dollar coin was only issued in this PNC by Australia Post and a two coin set issued by The Royal Australian Mint.
