The Figures of
Note series of gold-plated 99.9% pure silver, proof quality coins
depict historic figures as they were originally represented on Australia's
first decimal currency notes issued between 1966 and 1974.
The reverse of this coin depicts Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820), the English
botanist who made the first major collection of Australian flora during
James Cook's voyage of discovery between 1768 and 1771; and Caroline
Chisholm (1808-1877), who worked to establish better conditions, including
suitable employment and accommodation, for young migrant women in New South
Wales. Australia's first five dollar banknote featured the image of Banks on
the front and the image of Chisholm on the back. The reverse design, which
includes a coloured background, also incorporates The Perth Mint's 'P'
mintmark.
