The Figures of
Note series of gold-plated 99.9% pure silver, proof quality coins depict
historic figures as they were originally represented on Australia's first
decimal currency notes issued between 1966 and 1974. The reverse of this
coin depicts John Macarthur (1767-1834), who contributed to the
development of the Australian wool industry, especially through the use of
high-quality Spanish sheep to breed the Australian merino; and William
James Farrer (1845-1906), who played a major role in developing disease
resistant wheat including 'Federation', which allowed wheat farming to
advance into drier areas. Australia's first two dollar banknote featured the
image of Macarthur on the front and the image of Farrer on the back. The
reverse design, which includes a coloured background, also incorporates The
Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark.
