The design on this 2009 release combines traditional coin sculpture and a brightly-coloured image of a bilby. These coins have a highly detailed background design, and a colour image pad printed directly onto the surface of the coin. A type of a bandicoot, with soft greyish fur, large ears and a black, white-tipped tail, Bilbies are marsupials which have poor eyesight but an excellent sense of smell to locate food. They live below ground in earth burrows. The Bilby inhabits mulga shrub-lands and Spinifex grasslands, from south-west Queensland to the northern parts of Western Australia. Despite the hot climatic temperatures of their habitat, Bilbies do not need to drink water, receiving all their moisture from their food which includes insects, seeds, bulbs, fruit and fungi.
