The 2008 $1 uncirculated Echidna is the second release in the Royal Australian Mint's Land Series. These 2008 $1 coins have a highly detailed sculpted background design, and a colour image pad printed directly onto the surface of the coin. Also known as the spiny anteater, the Short-beaked Echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) is one of Australia's unique egg-laying mammals. Echidnas look fearsome with their sharp spines that cover the back of their short stocky bodies but in fact, they are a shy animal that curls up into a ball when frightened. Ants are one of their preferred foods and are featured in the sculptured background of this coin.
