XVIII Commonwealth Games Melbourne

The Queen's Baton relay has been a tradition of the Commonwealth Games since 1958. The baton carries Her Majesty's message to the athletes from Buckingham Palace, London, to the Opening Ceremony. The Melbourne 2006 Queen's Baton Relay was the world's longest, most inclusive relay. It took the Queen's Baton on an epic journey to all 71 nations of the Commonwealth over a year and a day, from 14th March 2005 to 15th March 2006. The innovative Melbourne Queen's Baton harnessed the very latest communications technologies to enable people across the globe to follow its epic journey. It was the first baton to use global positioning system to track its location; the first to feature a tiny camera capable of delivering sound and images of the relay live via the internet. It was also the first baton to deliver an electronic version of Her Majesty's message to the games.
