Introduced in the 1930s, the
Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber aircraft
developed for the United States Army Air Corps. The B-17 was primarily
employed in daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II
against German industrial, civilian, and military targets. In the War in the
Pacific, the B-17 conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields. The
B-17 was armed with thirteen .50 in (12.7 mm) M2 Browning machine guns in
4(four) turrets in dorsal, ventral, nose and tail, two in waist positions, two
beside cockpit and one in the lower dorsal position
The
Boeing B-29 Superfortress was one of the largest aircraft to see service
during World War II. It was a four-engine propeller-driven heavy bomber flown by
the United States in World War II and later in the Korean War. The Superfortress
boasted remote-controlled machine-gun turrets, a pressurized cabin, and an
electronic fire-control system. The B-29 was the primary aircraft in the
American firebombing campaign against the Empire of Japan in the final months of
World War II, and carried the atomic bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and
Nagasaki. The B-29 was the first combat aircraft to carry and drop atomic bombs,
first on Hiroshima by "Enola Gay", then Nagasaki by "Bockscar,"
becoming the first and only aircraft to effectively end a world war. B-29's
were finally retired from combat service in 1960 by a jet-propelled Air Force.
B-29's Armament consisted of two 12.7-mm (0.5-inch) machine guns in each of
remote-controlled turrets, plus three 12.7-mm (0.5-inch) machine guns, or two
12.7-mm guns and one 20-mm cannon in the tail turret.
