Crafted by the Royal Australian Mint in 99.99% pure gold, this legal tender,
limited edition coin celebrates the 125 years of The Ashes, one of the
world's most venerable sporting contests. In 1882, at the Oval, the English
cricket team lost to Australia for the first time on native soil. The match was
so tense a spectator is said to have bitten through his umbrella handle. The
legend began after Australia's narrow victory over England in 1882, when The
Sporting Times published the following mock obituary: "In Affectionate
Remembrance of ENGLISH CRICKET, which died at the Oval on 29th AUGUST, 1882,
Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances R.I.P.
- The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia." When the
English team next toured Australia, they were presented with an urn containing
'The Ashes'.
